Sequencing batch reactors treat waste water such as sewage or the output from anaerobic digesters or mechanical biological treatment facilities in a batch treatment process. Oxygen is bubbled through the waste water to reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) producing a high quality effluent with a low turbidity and nitrogen levels capable of meeting Title 22 effluent quality standards.
The SBR accomplishes equalization, aeration, and clarification in a timed sequence in a single reactor basin. By varying the operating strategy aerobic, anaerobic, or anoxic conditions can be achieved to encourage the growth of desirable micro-organisms.
